XML and Online Content for Journals

Techset has been implementing full text xml-first (and previously SGML-first) workflows since xml was first introduced and we currently use over a dozen different dtd's, with no xml workflow being too complicated for us to handle. Apart from the use of a generic dtd at article clean up stage, we work with the publisher’s chosen dtd at the very beginning of the process, avoiding conversion processes and ensuring that the content is available with the publisher’s chosen dtd as early as possible in the production process. This both makes for a simpler workflow and avoids introducing conversion errors.

Depending on a journal’s requirement, we upload full-text xml and/or web-optimized PDF files at the following stages of article production:

  • Immediately after acceptance and prior to copyediting and composition
  • Immediately after composition at page proof stage, but prior to author corrections
  • Immediately after author corrections have been undertaken
  • At final issue stage

These stages involve the full validation of xml content to ensure the online product is accurate and matches the publisher’s requirements.

At all these stages, if it is a journal requirement, we also upload supplementary material, i.e. material that is published online, but not as part of the article in print.

XML and Online Content for Books

Over the last few years more of our book customers have required xml tagging of their book content. With so much experience of xml workflows accrued through journal production, there is no type of book content that Techset is not able to produce using an xml-first workflow. We currently use several different DTDs when producing book content XML.

Preparing for the future

With Techset's wealth of knowledge in producing documents to meet all academic needs, we are constantly keeping up with new software technologies. One of the most recent introductions to our industry is MathJax, as you can see from the text below, this allows full mathematical online rendering direct from LaTeX code.

When $a \ne 0$, there are two solutions to \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\) and they are $$x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}.$$
