Copyediting
We believe that the key to being able to produce quality work is rooted in our ability to provide quality copyediting and that almost everything else concerned with quality of production flows from this.
Techset has spent a huge amount of time and effort creating what we believe is one of the best offshore copyediting facilities anywhere, based around the principles of:
- only employing copyeditors with excellent Use of English skills,
- maximum automation of the routine tasks involved in copyediting by development and use of copyediting software tools, and
- comprehensive training
We have a structured approach to copyediting depending on the difficulty of the content being edited, with styling, spelling, reference structuring and reference linking handled by our standard copyeditors using our editing software and grammar, sentence structure, sense and overall clarity of meaning being handled by our English Language experts. Unless a mistake is obviously wrong or can be verified by online or other reference sources, all proposed changes are raised as author queries.
We offer several levels of pre-editing and copyediting:
Pre-editing where the source files are spell checked, styled according to journal or house style, with figure and table citations being matched to the figures and tables supplied and reference and note citations matched to the notes or reference list supplied and with references ordered, styled, structured, checked for missing material and CrossRef linked.
These pre-edited files are sometimes sent to external copyeditors for more extensive editing.
Level 1 copyediting as above, but with an eye to sense and clarity of meaning, usually applied to well written material where there is no need to enhance the author’s text.
Level 2 copyediting is the standard copyediting level where a full copyedit is undertaken including grammar, tenses, sentence structure, sense and overall clarity of meaning. We do not, however, rewrite any of the author’s text, unless a mistake is obvious with a straightforward solution, rather we raise all proposed changes as author queries.
Level 3 copyediting is reserved for material where the English is not good and where sense and meaning are hard to discern. As well as doing everything that a level 2 copyedit requires, we will also attempt to rewrite, restructure and reorganise text. Techset has been approved as a level 3 copyediting supplier by several of our customers.
For those customers who prefer not to use offshore copyediting, we have a bank of tried, tested and very experienced UK and US copyeditors that we use on a regular basis.
