‘Total Concept’ Book Project Management

Techset Composition has successfully project managed hundreds of books and provided a trustworthy, reliable and valuable outsourcing service to book publishers in the USA, UK and Europe.

We really do understand book production and have a complete knowledge of the process, from unedited manuscript through to delivery of print, web files and eBook versions.

When it comes to dealing with authors we know that they need to be handled with respect and tact, but that schedules are paramount and that a firm approach is also sometimes required. When providing total concept project management, we contact authors immediately upon receipt of their manuscript to introduce ourselves and to discuss the schedule with them, making sure that they are clear what is required at the stages they will be involved in and when those stages will happen. We stay in constant contact with them, updating them and making sure they are prepared to undertake their parts of the process. In so doing, authors are forewarned of the schedule, and any problems an author may have with a proposed schedule can be discussed well in advance.

The specific functions we undertake are:

  • Evaluating author source files against hardcopy to ensure that they match throughout
  • Evaluating author manuscripts to ensure that there is no missing material and that all permissions have been obtained
  • Applying for any missing permissions
  • Evaluating electronic illustration files and hardcopy art in terms of reproduction quality. Making sure all figures are included and ensuring there is no discrepancy between electronic and hardcopy versions
  • Contacting the author(s) and/or book editor about any problems encountered during the above evaluating procedures
  • Creating a schedule, informing all involved about the schedule and any changes to the schedule, and progress chasing throughout the life of the schedule
  • Copy editing using editors qualified in the subject of the title to be edited
  • Contacting the author(s) over queries raised by the copy editor
  • Sizing illustrations and ensuring labelling is consistent with the text
  • Distributing proofs electronically either as email attachments or by uploading to an FTP site, or as paper proofs dispatched by mail/courier. Confirming receipt of proofs and ensuring return of proofs on schedule
  • Arranging an independent proof read
  • Reviewing, collating and checking corrections
  • Indexing
